【英文單字不一樣】英文常搞混用法：other／the other／the others／another

 

最近有許多學生反應英文裡有一組特別容易混淆的字，

若想要表達另一個的時候，不知道該選"another", "the other", "other", others", 或是"the others"，

究竟這幾個字的差異在哪裡呢？今天就來一次搞懂英文常搞混用法吧！

Other／Others

相信這是大部分人最常搞混的用法之一吧~

other與others就只差了一個"s"，但他們的意思與用法卻很不一樣喔！

 

◎ Other

指其他的、剩下的，此單字為形容詞，非名詞

例句：
• She has other things to do in the evening.
• Do you have other ways to solve this question?

 

◎ Others

意思如同Other + N.，詞性為名詞，沒有限定任何事物

例句：
• Some people like tomato; others like potato.
• People should learn by the mistakes of others.

 

看完了Other vs. Others後，

我們再來看看更進階的The other vs. The others，

除了跟上面的一樣在other後面多加了"s"以外，

這次多加了"the"在前面！

 

The other／The others

多加了"the"在最前面，跟剛剛的又差在哪裡了呢？

 

◎ The other

指剩下的那一個，有限定的意思在

例句：
• Mary has two brothers, one is younger, and the other is older.
• There are two girls in the calssroom, one is wearing a blue T-shirt, and the other one is wearing a jacket.

 

◎ The others

指其他、剩下的人事物

例句：
• Some of my friends play basketball; the others only watch basketball games on TV.
• I think this cup looks a lot better and nicer than the others in the store.

Another

最後一個我們來看到Another！

在other前面加上了"an"，也是我們常見的「另一個」的英文用法。

那他又跟上面4個差別在哪裡呢：

 

◎ Another

⑴ 指另一個事物，的意思，但沒有限定哪一個，可當名詞或形容詞用

例句：
• I’m still hungry. I want to order another meal.
• There are 3 plates one the table. One is blue, another is black, and the other is orange.

 

⑵ 後面亦可接複數名詞，代表額外的

例句：
• It looks like we have to wait another 2 weeks for the room to be repaired.
• The new refrigerator won’t be deliver for another 3 days.
